Heatstroke: A Dangerous

Summer Threat

What is Heatstroke?

Heatstroke is a common condition during the hot season. It occurs after prolonged exposure to extreme heat, causing body temperature to rise to a point where it can no longer regulate its temperature effectively. Symptoms may include headache, dizziness, seizures, an irregular heartbeat, rapid breathing, or shock. If left untreated , it can affect the heart, brain, kidneys and muscles. Delayed treatment can be life-threatening.

Symptoms of Heatstroke

  • The body becomes very hot, with a body temperature reaching up to 40°C
  • Headache and dizziness
  • Hot skin and intense thirst
  • Rapid breathing and a fast pulse
  • Fatigue, nausea and vomiting
  • Seizures, muscle stiffness and loss of consciousness
Who Is at Risk of Heatstroke?
  • Children under 5 years old and older adults because their bodies may not regulate heat as effectively
  • People with chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure or heart disease
  • People who work, exercise or spend extended periods outdoors, such as when farming
  • People who are overweight or living with obesity
  • People who do not get enough rest
  • People who consume alcohol

How to Prevent Heatstroke

  • Avoid outdoor activities or prolonged exposure to extremely hot weather
  • Wear light-colored, loose, lightweight clothing that allows heat to escape
  • Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee or foods high in sugar
  • Drink water regularly, even when not thirsty, to stay hydrated
  • Apply sunscreen or use an umbrella when outdoors

In addition, the TRIA Medical Wellness Center offers acupuncture treatment by doctors specializing in Traditional Chinese Medicine, which can help support the body’s balance and blood circulation during the summer.
