ABI
What Is an ABI Test?
ABI, or Ankle-Brachial Index, is a test that compares blood pressure at the ankle with blood pressure in the upper arm. A blood pressure cuff and Doppler device are used to assess arterial blood flow in the legs.
The test is non-invasive, usually painless, and takes only a short time. The result provides supporting information when assessing possible peripheral artery disease and should be considered together with symptoms, medical history, and other relevant examinations.
Who May Benefit from an ABI Test?
A doctor may recommend the test for individuals who experience pain or tightness in the calves while walking, cold feet, a weak pulse in the feet, or wounds on the feet or legs that heal slowly.
It may also be considered for individuals with risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, a history of smoking, or an increased risk of vascular disease. Suitability for the test should be assessed individually.
Aftercare
You can normally return to your usual daily activities immediately after the test, and no recovery period is generally required. You may feel temporary pressure or tightness while the cuffs are inflated, which should resolve once the test is completed.
When the results are available, consult a doctor for appropriate interpretation. When an abnormal result is identified, further assessment or an individualised care plan may be recommended. The ABI result should not be used alone to diagnose a condition or adjust treatment without medical advice.
